In early 2008, when the Jl. Legian site became available, Christian Vanneque immediately knew it had to be the location for his new restaurant. “It was the charming terrace which meant I had to have this venue. It reminded me of my very first restaurant venture, Le Moulin de Village in the 8th district in Paris in the late 1970’s”, he says, “It was situated on a lively thoroughfare in the heart of the ‘city’ and with a charming terrace just like Sip Wine Bar!”
Born from Christian’s abiding passion for great wines and fine food, Sip Wine Bar combines the nostalgia for his roots with the need he saw for good, honest French ‘brasserie’ cuisine in Bali. The brasserie-like restaurant is typified by banquette seating, mirrored walls, a lively urban atmosphere, a superb selection of wines and traditional and regional hearty French fare – all at reasonable prices. Open from lunch time till late night, with a menu selected for a diverse clientele, Sip Wine Bar was an instant success.
Sip’s founder, Christian Vannequé, is a sommelier by trade. His credentials were established in the early ’70s becoming France’s youngest Head Sommelier, at the age of 20, at La Tour d’Argent in Paris where he remained for ten years.
It was a humbling and gratifying experience for Christian and his team of 14 sommeliers and cellar men to ‘nourish’ and guard the largest wine cellar in the world; currently comprising 500,000 bottles!

The Historic Purchase of Chateau D’ Yquem 1811
My search for an old and exceptional vintage of Yquem started in November 2010 via several sources in London and Paris. In January of this year, I investigated two prominent London wine merchants who each had a bottle of Yquem 1811 for sale.
While one wine merchant could not produce adequate proof of authenticity, the other merchant, The Antique Wine Company, could provide a Record of Inspection from Château d’ Yquem signed by 3 parties: Ms. Sandrine Garbay -Maitre de Chais of Château d’Yquem-, Mr. John Salvi Master of Wine Bordeaux- , and Stephen Williams -C.E.O. of The Antique Wine Company-, certifying the authenticity of the bottle which was reconditioned at the Château d’Yquem in 2007.
